Learn how to choose the best baby muslin squares for swaddling, burping, and more. This guide covers fabric, size, and versatility so you can pick the right muslins for your newborn.
Quick answer
Focus on 100% cotton muslin squares that are large enough for swaddling (at least 70cm x 70cm) and versatile enough for burping, feeding covers, and makeshift bibs. A plain set works for everyday use; a themed gift set is ideal for a baby shower or newborn present.
Fabric matters: 100% cotton vs blends
Pure cotton muslin is breathable, softens with washing, and reduces the risk of overheating during swaddling. Cotton-polyester blends may wrinkle less but can trap heat and feel less gentle on newborn skin. If you plan to use muslins directly against your baby's face or as a burp cloth, 100% cotton is the safer, more comfortable choice.
Size and coverage: why 70cm x 70cm is a good minimum
A square that is too small won't wrap securely around a newborn or cover your shoulder during burping. A 70cm x 70cm muslin square gives enough fabric for a snug swaddle, a feeding cover, or a clean surface for tummy time. Smaller squares (e.g., 50cm) are fine for wiping spills but limit your options for swaddling.
Versatility: one square, many jobs
The best muslins pull double (or triple) duty. Look for squares that can serve as a burp cloth, nursing cover, stroller shade, lightweight blanket, or changing pad liner. This reduces how many separate items you need to pack in your diaper bag. A plain white square hides stains better, while patterned ones add a cheerful touch for outings.
How to choose baby muslin squares: decision rules
- Check the fabric content: Look for '100% cotton' on the label. Cotton muslin is breathable, hypoallergenic, and gets softer with each wash. Avoid synthetic blends if you plan to swaddle or use the square near your baby's face.
- Measure the square size: Aim for at least 70cm x 70cm. This size gives enough fabric for a secure swaddle, a feeding cover, or a burp cloth that covers your shoulder. Smaller squares are less versatile.
- Consider how many you need: Newborns go through multiple muslins daily for spit-ups, spills, and diaper changes. A set of 4–6 squares is a practical starting point. A gift set of two is fine as a present but may need supplementing for daily use. If buying for your own baby, plan to have at least 4 muslin squares on hand.
- Decide between plain or patterned: Plain white squares are stain-resistant in appearance and easy to bleach. Patterned squares add personality and work well as a stroller cover or nursing scarf. Choose based on whether you prioritize practicality or style.
